As a general rule, you should empty out your septic tank once every three to five years. However, this will vary depending on usage and how many people live in your household the size of the septic tank and what has been going into the system. If you are unsure if your tank needs emptying, we are happy to come out or have a chat on the phone.

We truly hope you never experience this however when your tank is full it will simply overflow.

Typically we allow anything from 30 - 60 minutes to do a septic tank service. However depending on access, type of septic tank, and how regularly the septic tank has been emptied can be a factor.

For septic tanks, empty the tank when the level of sludge reaches approx. 50% of the tank’s volume. For sewage treatment plants, empty the primary tank when the level of sludge reaches approx. 30%

The better you take care of your septic tank the longer life for your septic system will function. Aerated waste water system typically needs servicing every 6 months.

and a standard septic tank with a pump chamber will be fine every 12 month - depending on use.

It’s most likely your air blower pump or the chamber pump filter is blocked. Often caused by excessive household water usage. If your alarm is ringing give us a call.

You might have a blocked filter in the pump chamber. Give us a call and we can organise a filter clean for you.

Check for the following:

• strong foul, rotten-egg smell around your septic tank or application area
• gurgling noises from drains
• slow draining of toilets and sinks
• Overflowing

• Toxic chemicals are going into your septic tank system
• There is too much water going into your septic tank

It is a good idea to test your sump pump every three months or so.

Unlike a septic tank, a cesspit has no rudimentary treatment system, meaning that whatever goes in must come out. There is no breaking down of waste and because of this can be harmful if breathing those fumes.
